Why This Walk?

A perfect walking route if you love the mountains but want to enjoy a less demanding itinerary in the Dolomites. Walking in the foothills of the Dolomites you will be surrounded by mountains without having to climb high peaks or face demanding hikes and provides a gentler alternative to the Alta Via. The walk showcases the majestic Dolomites and offers endless views of peaks and valleys, castles and ancient abbeys. You will journey through picturesque orchards and vineyards that produce some of the finest Italian wines. You will enjoy the warm hospitality of the South Tyrolean people, in a region where German and Italian culture perfectly combine. Explore colourful Bressanone on your arrival and along the way, discover charming villages like Chiusa, a haven for artists and poets, and the vibrant city of Bolzano, the gateway to the Dolomites.

Path Walkthrough

Your journey begins in Bressanone, the oldest city in Tyrol, where colourful alleys and the frescoed bishops’ palace invite exploration. A short bus ride the following morning will take you to Novacella Abbey, known for its exquisite white wines. A scenic traverse through woods and vineyards leads to Velturno, a charming town surrounded by chestnut trees, once a summer retreat for nobility.
The next day offers captivating highlights, including the Sabiona Monastery atop a dramatic cliff, the picturesque hamlet of Chiusa, and the riverside village of Barbiano. The journey continues through tranquil woods and orchards to Collalbo, walking along the Renon plateau, with prehistoric rock carvings as a unique detour.
The following day, a circular walk unveils Kematen Lake and the striking earth pyramids, before a scenic train ride back to Collalbo. On your penultimate day, you journey through farmland, forests and orchards and a countryside dotted with castles to Castel Roncolo, ending in lively Bolzano. The finale, an Alpe di Siusi circular walk, reveals Europe’s largest Alpine plateau, with stunning views of the Dolomites.
