Walking Through History
Hadrian’s Wall Path takes you from Wallsend by the River Tyne through the remote spectacular scenery of central Northumbria, descending, past Carlisle, to the lonely marshes of the Solway, the most northerly point of the Roman Empire.
Carving through the unpopulated Northumbrian landscape, the combination of rugged beauty and history makes for stimulating walking. Along the walk are fascinating ruins and history; you pass turrets, forts and milecastles brimming with Roman history and archaeology.
Lisa from our team recently spent a week exploring Hadrian’s Wall. You can read all about her journey in the blog she put together - a memoir of her experience along this historic trail.
Hadrian's Wall: the largest Roman artefact
In AD 122, Hadrian’s Wall was constructed by the soldiers of Hadrian’s 2nd and 6th legions. It took just over a decade to build the 73-mile barrier coast to coast across England, guarding the northern limits of the Roman Empire. This astonishing achievement remains the largest ancient monument in northern Europe and a Roman World Heritage Site. Large garrison forts like Birdoswald were built all along the line. Stretched out between these, every third of a mile, was a watchturret, and every mile, smaller forts known as mileforts.
These structures enabled the Romans to command with efficiency and speed, as every milecastle turret could directly see a fort. In its heyday, this intimidating structure was manned by 10,000 soldiers.
Walking Hadrian’s Wall, it is impossible not to become fascinated by the history and feel the presence of everyday Roman military and domestic life.
Path Walkthrough
The path is widely regarded as one of the more accessible, less challenging National Trail paths, with routes over moorland and rolling fields reaching their highest point at 345 meters (Green Slack). However, the walk can be fairly wild in places, with grassy paths shifting to craggy sandstone typical to this area, skirting around some of the higher escarpments off the side of the path itself.
With the wall at your side, navigation is not an issue when it comes to walking Hadrian's Wall Path. The route is also well marked with National Trail way-markers, and you’ll be well-equipped with guidebooks and route information.

Walk West To East
Walking Hadrian’s Wall Path from West to East is physically easier and typically more picturesque than the conventional East to West direction.
Hadrian’s Wall was built across the beautiful, but wild Northumbrian countryside. Weather on England’s northernmost border can prove unpredictable; walking eastwards, in poor conditions, you have wind and rain at your back, not driving against you.
In fine weather (come summer there is plenty), the afternoon sun is behind you, not in your eyes and the emerging light brings those far flung corners of the terrain into focus. Many classic views are arguably best seen from West to East – such as Crag Lough, Cuddy’s Crags, Sewingshield Crags and Limestone Corner.
Walking East from Solway coast to Wallsend, Roman sites become progressively interesting. Each day peels back insights and examples of everyday Roman military and domestic life as you head from Carlisle towards Newcastle-which seems anti-climactic when travelling East to West. Plus, Newcastle is a wonderful place to end your walk and perhaps spend an extra day of your trip.

Walk East to West
The customary way to walk Hadrian’s Wall is East to West, for three old accepted reasons:
- Hadrian built his Wall starting in Newcastle, mainly for ease of supply of materials and military backup.
- Exploration of the Roman sites progressed westwards from Newcastle, and archaeologically numbered and mapped in that direction, rather than for any walking.
- When Hadrian’s Wall Path was designated a National Trail, the National Trail Guide (the only guide at the time) described the Trail in this direction. This has since changed with the support of excellent guidebooks, as well as the Harvey walker’s map which caters for both directions that Celtic Trails supplies. Today, there are also useful mobile apps to help you along the way.

We really enjoyed the physical history, 2000 year old architecture/engineering, social history etc. Very nice to be immersed in the journey too of course. Eat, walk, Eat, Sleep, Repeat ?? Always a bit reluctant for it to come to an end. A good sign.

Les Millward. Leek - June 2023
Our experience with Celtic Trails was very good. Arrangements all went smoothly and accommodation totally suitable.
Alan and Jean Drury - June 2023
Celtic Trails offers extremely thorough and comprehensive information on every aspect of trip. Effective booking arrangements and all achieved with charm when we had to make alterations. Lots of blisters and trashed feet due to the heat even with my well worn boots but despite that a fabulous experience and as planning was so thorough, it was all splendid. This Hadrian?s Wall walk was on my bucket list and I?m so pleased we did it, the heat made it super challenging but we still finished on time and met amazing people en route and saw the most wonderful views and scenery. I?d recommend it to anyone but maybe take more than 6 days to fully enjoy what you pass along the way.
Anon - June 2023
Much better Much better Much better than other walking holiday companies: swift and correct responses to all my questions & wishes. In particular the flexibility in the tours. Celtic Trails do very good walking tours that you can tailor to your own needs without extensive costs. They do everything they promise.
Mr. D.R. Potters, The Netherlands - June 2023
Celtic Trails were professional, friendly and helpful. Lots of walkers we met just walked and many regretted not taking the time to soak up the Roman History around them. I;m really glad we had 'rest' days to enjoy the Forts and appreciate our Great British history. To us, this was as enjoyable as the walk itself. I loved the absolute remoteness - turning 360 degrees and only seeing valleys and dips and fields ... and of course the wall!
Anon - June 2023
Our experience with Celtic Trails was exceptional! When we travel next to the UK we will definitely use their services! This is one of the best holiday experiences of my life, enabling me to have an adventure with my two sons which we'll talk about for rest of our lives. The people of England were fantastic from those we stayed with to those we met along the trail! All made possible by a great planning, coordination and support effort by Penny and the Celtic Trails team

Celtic Trails were organized, efficient, warm, and open to questions about rescheduling. This gave me the opportunity to see places I hadn?t before, to experience history on my own walking power rather than being driven by a company, to be close to nature, and to meet lovely people who love the idea of walking.
Dr. Mary Desrocher - May 2023
Really good experience. Everything was sorted out prior to the walk. Having the comfort of knowing meals, luggage transfers and accommodation booking was in place, allowed me to concentrate on the walk. The accommodation standard was exceptional. Great hosts, lovely clean rooms and amazing food. This was an excellent way for my friend and I to spend a week in each other's company with a sense of achievement at the end of it. It was a bit of a challenge, with some hard days walking but it gave us the chance to sort out the world's problems while walking through some of the best scenery in England. As one young lady said to us in a café "You could have had a week in Benidorm in the sun, lazing by the pool" Yes we could. But where's the fun in that?
Ian Gilmour - May 2023

Long distance walking is great for the soul and for being able to visit numerous places in one holiday. Hadrian's Wall is a good walk, especially for beginners - relatively easy with lots of cultural places to visit on the way. The Roman Forts and museums were fabulous.

This was my first booked walk and Celtic Trails made it so easy and trouble-free - I'd have no trouble in recommending them and will certainly be looking to book another walk through them. I came away from the holiday feeling I'd achieved something worthwhile and the experience was unforgettable. I wanted to experience the dramatic English countryside with a bit of history thrown in to the mix and Hadrian's Wall Path fitted the bill perfectly. The 4 - 5 day walk fitted the bill as this was my first foray in to long-distance walking. Scotland or Wales next - I haven't made up my mind.

Celtic Trails were very well organised, with a great choice of walks to cater for different fitness levels. I felt looked after. The walk from Birdoswald to Simonsburn was most spectacular. On the whole, our accommodation was excellent and we understand we booked standard accommodation; if I were to undertake another of these holidays, I would prefer to pay more to have accommodation of a consistent standard (we cannot rate Walwick highly enough).
Mr & Mrs Rolland - June 2018
"Celtic Trails - you did an excellent job - everything went smoothly, making for a worry-free trip! We are already planning our next Celtic Trails vacation! Please thank the baggage transfer company for us - their work was excellent, as well!"
Shortridge - May 2018
"Well organised, clear instructions, B&B's were of a high standard - better than expected - all very good/excellent. As this was my first experience of a long-distance walking I had nothing to compare it with. However, it has made me want to do more holidays like this. We were very lucky with the weather which helped. My 23 year old daughter also enjoyed it and it was great to spend a whole week with her in such a wonderful environment."
Sutton - May 2018
"A late booking very efficiently arranged."
J. A. T - April 2018
What we enjoyed most was the scenery, bag transfer and the quality of the B&Bs. A long distance walking holiday is a great way to see the country side and to get fit.
M & R - March 2018
"It was a good quality family time. We have a 13yr old son. Often on holidays we end up 'doing our own thing' reading, swimming or whatever. But after a bit of a sulky 1st day we got into the spirit of it and had a lovely time; chatting and so on. Admin was very efficient. Quick responses. Walk tailored to our needs. When the pack didn't arrive at our home, one was sent to our first B&B. We would be happy to use Celtic Trails again, excellent service."
Chang - August 2017
"Most of the accommodation was wonderful, they could not do enough for you! Overall, it was an amazing adventure! Thanks for everything, Penny."
S. R - July 2017
"Don't feel we can offer any comments for improvement. First class service & support. Thank you!"
Molloy - July 2017
"We were delighted with the level of info. provided with the walk pack - all and everything we needed. Accommodation exceeded our expectations."
Hedley - June 2017
"I enjoyed completing an ambition, walking with friends and your help to allow me to walk with my dog."

"Incredible countryside, the views, the camaraderie which happens among walkers. Met many amazing people. Thank you for a very memorable experience."
Amerighi - September 2016
"We would certainly use Celtic Trails again – you were very efficient and responded promptly to all out questions & were very flexible."
Homel - September 2016
"All went perfectly, very impressively co-ordinated. The walk was a big challenge and we all proud to have completed it, its time for reflection, meeting among other travelers. It was a fabulous experience and I’d like to do it again, on another walk organised by Celtic Trails."
Kollé - September 2016
"Please let me congratulate again for the rapidity and effectiveness that you have shown by organising the whole trip on a very late request of mine. The experience we had with you/Celtic Trails was excellent and we’d like to try another one in the future. Before contacting you, we contacted another company – they told me that they could not organise the trip at such a short notice. Your attitude made the difference. The material was complete to even to the slightest detail and such a thoroughness was extremely appreciated."
Dalla Ragione - July 2016
"We had a wonderful walk along Hadrian’s Wall. Everything was perfect! All the B&B’s were very good, wonderful people and some were really above all our expectation. Lovely. The whole trip was a great experience."
Siethoff - July 2016
"We booked the more expensive trail, but it was worth every penny. All B&B’s and hotels were as one could hope for, all excellent hosts and guesthouses to return to."
Berkers - May 2016
"Excellent personal service. We particularly appreciated the extraordinary efforts your staff made to meet our special needs. A very warm thank-you."

Local Points Of Interest
Once Brewed
From Once Brewed you are able to walk to Vindolanda Fort, which is considered to be the most significant roman site, but not directly on the Hadrian's Wall path, www.vindolanda.com. It would be a great shame to miss out Vindolanda if you have a keen interest in the historical aspect of Hadrian's Wall.
There is an excellent hail and ride bus service, the AD 122, which runs regularly between all the main towns and the sites along the Path between April and end September (thereafter only on Sundays until the end of October) enabling you to visit sites which you have not had a chance to see on your walking days.
Newcastle
The sprawling city of the region has more than enough to cater to a wide range of interests, be it museums, theatre or places to eat - you'll find plenty to occupy your time among Newcastle's genteel, Georgian-era architecture.
The North-eastern city is found at the end or beginning of all itineraries, with the exception of HWP4 & HWP8. If you're looking to extend your holiday with an extra day spent in the city - then let us know, we'll be more than happy to arrange this for you.
