Why this walk?

Located in the medieval kingdom of Aragon, this is a walk that truly reflects the Spain of a bygone era. The craggy landscape of this region is sprinkled with just a few traditional villages, which though small in population, are rich in heritage. Spanish walking holidays are the best way to visit Romanesque chapels, prehistoric caves and take in some Medieval and Moorish architecture, as well as experience the day-to-day culture of traditional Spanish villages.

Scenically, there is also an awful lot to impress. The characteristic gorges of the region have long been attracting canyoners from across Europe and provide a dramatic backdrop for your walk as make your way down steep cliffs towards the perfectly clear, turquoise waters of the river below.

Walking Holidays Aragon-Sierra de Guara - Map
Our walking trails in Northern Spain take you on a circular walk around the Sierra de Guara, starting in Alquézar

The Path

A circular walk starting and ending in the small but charming hilltop town of Alquezar. Your first day will be spent enjoying the area around Alquezar with the option of visiting pre-historic caves or crossing some of the impressive bridges that cross the nearby gorges. From Alquezar you head north into the heart of the Sierra De Guara along its typically craggy terrain to take in some of the most spectacular gorges, before dropping down towards the welcoming waters below. The following few days offer a more gentle walk through rolling landscape and pretty villages before returning to the dramatic scenery of the gorges for the remainder of the walk. This includes the opportunity to walk along the historical charcoal-makers path and through prime vulture habitat. Each day of walking can vary from approximately 4 to 7 hours and includes some steep ascents or descents with an average ascent/descent of 550m. The paths are varied and include walking on gravel, loose rock, grass and soil. For those seeking to explore the wider area, there is also the option of ending your holiday with a stay in the nearby city of Zaragoza, European City of Culture 2016.

The Accommodation

Aragon is one of the most under populated areas of Spain and so the style of living and accommodation in this area is very traditional. We have hand-picked your accommodation to provide the very best that the area has to offer, and walkers can expect to be looked after by friendly hosts in comfortable and clean en-suite rooms, many of which also feature a swimming pool. You holiday will both begin and end in a wonderful, high-standard hotel, whilst accommodation in between will be simpler but nonetheless comfortable and charming with a delicious dinner and packed lunch included.

Aragon: Sierra de Guara Client Reviews

    4.9/5 based on 7 reviews
The trip was wonderful and the accommodations well-chosen. We love the small scale and personal treatment from Celtic Trails. They are personal, responsive and responsible. These trips have been restorative and grounding, giving us car-free access to places we would not be able to arrange or discover on our own and to do so in a way that focuses on the nature, the environments and the scenery. The value for money was excellent, but more importantly, it was a chance to discover a new, relatively untouched corner of the world.
    - October 2019
We have only ever walked with Celtic Trails. This holiday was physically challenging at times, but mentally super-relaxing. A good antidote to the political situation at home!
    - September 2019
We heard about you from close friends, who have walked with Celtic Trails before. There is no reason that we wouldn't walk with Celtic Trails again: informative routes and explanations, good variety, good amount of walking each.
    - June 2018
We first heard about Celtic Trails in a newspaper article by Bill Bryson about Offa's Dyke and we have walked with you several times. This was one of the more difficult walks we've done, however the scenery was spectacular and unusual and the people in Northern Spain were very friendly. What most attracts us to a long distance walking holiday is the opportunity to see a country intimately; physical challenge; chance to see remote areas that most people never are able to experience.
    - May 2018
Celtic Trails were excellent compared to other companies. What I most enjoyed about this walk was the independence and the historical information.
    - April 2018
We heard about you in a Sunday Times article and you met our expectations. We most enjoyed the scenery and the isolation of this walk.
    - April 2018
We had a wonderful holiday in this most beautiful part of Spain and all of your arrangements worked smoothly.
