Why Walk Wainwright's Coast to Coast?

Alfred Wainwright, a renowned fell walker, created this breathtaking route using established footpaths and rights of way. In August 2022, it was announced that the Coast to Coast would become the UK’s newest National Trail.

The walk offers awe-inspiring scenery with a perfect balance of mountains, hills, and valleys. Although the diverse trail can be challenging, extended itineraries are available to help you enjoy every step at your own pace.

Tradition and Journey

Following tradition, start by dipping your toes in the Irish Sea at St. Bees and picking up a pebble for your journey. Explore the dramatic fells and Lakeland views of the Lake District, the rolling dales and valleys of Yorkshire, and the farmland of Mowbray before reaching the heather-clad North Yorkshire Moors. At the final destination, Robin Hood’s Bay, return the pebble to the sea and celebrate.

This popular route also allows you to enjoy the camaraderie of fellow walkers in quaint villages and cosy pubs along the way.

Coast to Coast Walk Through

The Coast to Coast Path offers walkers the chance to experience almost every type of English landscape in one spectacular walk, from St. Bees on the Irish Sea to Robin Hood’s Bay on the North Sea.

The journey begins with safe cliff-top walking at St. Bees before entering the Lake District National Park, renowned for its breath-taking scenery. After passing Kirkby Stephen, you’ll reach the summit of Nine Standards Rigg, named for the mysterious line of ancient 10ft cairns that stand on the edge of the escarpment.

Diverse Landscapes and Final Stretch

At the halfway point in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, the route intersects with the Pennine Way in Keld. By the time you reach the friendly market town of Richmond, the landscape changes to lower meadows and mining moors, dotted with pretty villages and outdoor museums.

The final stretch crosses the undulating North York Moors National Park, requiring many small ascents and descents. Enjoy mile after mile of purple heather-covered moorland in autumn as you approach the final section of cliff-top walking and the celebratory atmosphere of Robin Hood’s Bay.

To fully enjoy this spectacular path, you should have a good level of fitness and reliable map-reading skills to navigate areas of isolation and weather changes in mountainous regions.
