The Brecon Beacons has, for a long time been recognised as an outstanding walking destination, it has some truly stunning scenery from hidden waterfalls, to lush valleys, impressive mountain ranges and of course the Breacons Way . Already well and truly established as a daytime activity and heritage location, this month it can now boost itself as an award winning night-time destination having been awarded the prestigious International Dark Sky Reserve status.
Brecon Beacons Dark Sky Time Lapse
This new honour means it is only the 5th place in the World and only place in Wales to be granted this status, putting it in the same league as Exmoor in England, Mont Megantic in Quebec, Canada, Aoraki Mackenzie in New Zealand, making it an ideal viewing platform for the Milky Way, major constellations and on a good day, meteor showers. With ever increasing light pollution and fewer and fewer places left to see the Milky Way we feel very lucky to have such a thing of beauty on our doorstep and even luckier that it is now protected.
